Well there’s a few things I’ve been unable to get Melanie to do since she’s been back home and they are sleep and update the blog. I’ll try to get her to post more details as soon as things settle down here. In the meantime I’m going to post the pics she took on her journey to pick up our son.

Hi!

As some of you might know, we had a wonderful opportunity to be a part of church plant while we lived in Louisville, KY – sojournchurch.com It has been our hope that we might also find a church plant to take part in while we are here in Hong Kong. We’ve been praying and seeking for almost a year and just recently we came across and new church plant in Tai Po (about an hour away from us). We got wind of the church by doing an online search for new churches in Hong Kong and we came across the newsletter from the Au Family.
Au Family Newsletter – Liberty Baptist Church
This Sunday we headed up to Tai Po by bus 91M & 74X from Hang Hau, and we reached the Tai Po Civic Centre, Function Room 2 just in time for the 10:15am service. We sang some hyms, listened to Pastor Au preach from Psalm 116, then had Sunday school regarding church finances. It was a blessed time although there were just a few of us in attendance (8 + kids). After the service we were able to have lunch with the Pastor’s family and Ezri and their son Alex enjoyed playing in our booth very much. The Pastor treated us to some authentic Chinese food (one of the restaurants where no English is spoken), we had very good conversation, they were married a month before Melanie and I and have a son a few months older than Ezri. They’ve only been in Hong Kong for 8 months so we have many things in common. We ask for prayer during this time as to whether God is calling us to take part in planting this church, and how we can best glorify him if called.

Well we made it through another transcontinental trip, over 6500 miles, 3 airports/countries, and a 12 hour time difference. We really had a blessed trip this time (praise God!). We flew to Chicago on the 19th and spent the night (this allowed us a good nights sleep before the long flight). We flew 13 hours from Chicago to Korea, and we were fortunate enough to have a few empty seats between us so Ezri could play and stretch out for a nap. We had a 3 hour layover an another 3 hour trip to Hong Kong. Our trip was about 26 hours from Chicago to our door in Hong Kong which is about half the time it took to go from HK to the U.S. As soon as we came out of the airport we were greeted by the Hong Kong heat and humidity – 90 degrees Fahrenheit and 70% humidity – Today we had a typhoon move in , most places and transportation (minibuses) were closed.
A few insights from our trip and travelling with children:
1. When travelling across the world, be sure to book all the way through to your destination. Going to the U.S. I only booked to Chicago and when our flight there was cancelled we had little help finding another flight.
2. When travelling with toddlers, travel during the daytime. As a single I used to like to travel overnight (because I would sleep), but as a parent it’s best to travel during the day because I daughter sleeps very little when travelling. Going to the states we left at 1am so we started out tired and after 50 hours without sleep Melanie and I were at the end of selves. Coming back to Hong Kong we left at 1 pm and we didn’t get crazy until 6am so it wasn’t until the very end of our trip. Literally, night and day, the difference it makes.
3. When travelling with toddlers, patience is a virtue. If your child is like ours and really does not like confined spaces then be sure to ask for a bulkhead row, and empty seat between (if possible of course). Even though the airline may ask parents of infants/toddlers if they’d like to board first, board the plane last, right before takeoff (you can save yourself almost a 1/2 hour of sitting by doing this). If your child is sleeping in a stroller before a security checkpoint, then just wait it out before the checkpoint (as long as you possibly can) because they will make you take the child out of the stroller even if she’s sound asleep.
4. Be prepared to distract and pacify and know that your child will most likely have some major breakdowns, so be prepared. Take some new toys they haven’t seen before (and a few favorites). A portable DVD player does wonders for us and all their favorite snacks.
5. If your child is less than two you will most likely get better service and more accommodations if you don’t buy a seat for your child. Our first trip to Hong Kong we bought our 9-month old daughter a seat. We were seated in the middle of a side aisle and the flight crew didn’t know how to handle a carseat that is backward facing. Planes aren’t accustomed to small children having their own seat so they really don’t know how to work with you. We could of gotten a bassinet if we hadn’t of bought the ticket which we highly recommend (even if you don’t use it it’s great for storage), and we would have been seated on a bulkhead row. Please learn from our mistakes. You can always ask for an empty seat between, and if the plane has one nearby they’ll most likely try to give it to you.
One of Ezri’s favorite activities during our trip home was spending time with her grandparents. This slideshow is some pics of Ezri with her pappy and grammy Drake, pappaw and gaga Case.
One of Ezri’s favorite activities during our trip home was playing with her cousins Brayden and Kylee. This slideshow is various pics of their activities.
So, just to update you, we’ve been visiting Melanie’s family for a few days now. We’ve visited with Mammaw Mary and Pappaw George; Ezri says “Mee-maw” and she can also say “George”, thanks to Curious George! We also went to Bowling Green to visit Grandmother Vanetta and Aunt Gwenda. It was a fun day and Ezri enjoyed playing with her 4-year-old cousin, Brady. They had a blast. This slide show is of time at her parents house, a visit to her Aunt Gwenda’s and a visit to her Uncle Kerry’s.
So, we have basically been waiting on the adoption….and government officials, in hopes that they would go ahead and sign off on our adoption and allow us to go pick Javi up before we leave for HK. Now, we are near positive that this is not going to happen. We will go back to HK on August 20 (incidentally Javi’s 1st birthday) and have an update completed there. The CIS there will then be handling our case (we hope) and hopefully things will go very smoothly from there. This is bitter-sweet news. We are glad that someone is finally (prayerfully/hopefully) taking jurisdiction and responsibility for our case. We are disappointed that we will not be taking Javi home with us—the initial reason for our visit to the states for an extended time being to pick him up. —— deep breath————
So, we are pretty much heart-broken over missing our son’s first birthday. We’re preparing a b-day package and sending it this week, but it just doesn’t quite cut it, ya know? Perhaps we’ll celebrate it when we do eventually get him home with us. Anyway, please pray that God will give us strength, energy, and perseverance as we go back home. Please also pray that he will just keep us going during this difficult time.
